Unit 1, Topic 3

Filing a Travel Insurance Claim

What You'll Learn

Document incidents properly while travelling
Follow the correct steps to file a claim
Avoid common mistakes that lead to claim rejection

How to File a Claim

  1. Contact your insurer immediately — Most policies have a 24/7 emergency assistance hotline. Call before incurring major expenses if possible.
  2. Get official documentation — Police reports for theft, medical reports for illness/injury, airline documentation for delays/cancellations.
  3. Keep all receipts — Every expense you want to claim must be supported by a receipt or invoice.
  4. Photograph everything — Damaged luggage, medical facilities, accident scenes.
  5. Complete the claim form within the deadline (usually 30–90 days after the incident).
  6. Submit all supporting documents — boarding passes, booking confirmations, medical records, police reports, receipts.

Common Reasons Claims Are Rejected

  • Filing after the deadline
  • Insufficient documentation (no police report for theft, no medical records)
  • Pre-existing condition not declared
  • Activity not covered (e.g., scuba diving below covered depth)
  • Travelling against government advice
  • Not contacting the emergency assistance line first for medical claims
Always save your insurer’s 24/7 emergency number in your phone contacts before you travel. In a crisis, you won’t want to search for it.
