Apply proven strategies to reduce your motor insurance premium

How to Make a Motor Claim

After an accident:

  1. Ensure everyone is safe and call emergency services if needed.
  2. Do not admit fault at the scene.
  3. Exchange details — names, insurance details and contact information with the other driver.
  4. Photograph everything — all vehicles, the road, and any damage.
  5. Report to your insurer within 24–48 hours (check your policy — late reporting can void your claim).
  6. Complete a claim form and submit all evidence.
  7. Loss adjuster inspection — a loss adjuster may inspect the vehicle before repairs are authorised.
Never repair your vehicle before the insurer has inspected it — doing so can result in your claim being rejected.

Saving on Your Premium

You can legally reduce your motor insurance premium by:

  • Protecting your no-claims discount (even one claim can reset years of savings)
  • Increasing your voluntary excess (you take on more risk but pay less upfront)
  • Choosing a smaller engine size or a car in a lower insurance group
  • Fitting approved security devices (immobilisers, trackers, dashcams)
  • Parking in a garage rather than on the street
  • Shopping around at renewal — loyalty rarely pays in insurance. Always compare at least three quotes.
