Forward Deployed Engineers help insurers test focused AI support while keeping policy and claims decisions accountable.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works with the people performing a process, then builds and validates software in that process. In AI, the role combines discovery, data integration, evaluation, deployment and handover.

FDE, explained

An FDE, or Forward Deployed Engineer, is an applied engineer who works close to the people facing a real operational problem. The role combines software and AI engineering with discovery, workflow design, evaluation, deployment, user support and handover. The goal is a system that fits the work and can be assessed in its real context.

Insurance operations and technology leaders: where to begin

Insurance tasks to investigate include searching internal procedures, organising incoming documents or drafting a response for adjuster review. These are support tasks. A pilot should not quietly turn them into automated coverage, pricing or claims decisions.

Value comes from measured implementation

Before live work, establish data permissions, access, system authority and where a qualified person must review. Test incomplete files and unusual events. Track factual errors, correction effort, routing accuracy and time. A good handover includes evaluation results, limits, owner, escalation and maintenance.

Set a baseline before a pilot. Use representative examples, include cases where the system should decline or escalate, and measure quality as well as speed. Keep people accountable for consequential decisions, use authorised data, and document how the system can be paused or changed.
